Zanthoxylum simulans

Flatspine Prickly Ash, Szechuan Pepper

Flatspine Prickly Ash (Zanthoxylum simulans) is a deciduous shrub native to China. Also known as Szechuan Pepper or Sichuan Pepper, it produces small berries with rough, reddish-brown shells that open to reveal the tiny, black pepper seeds. Z. simulans grows well in sun to partial shade and average soil, spreading its thorny branches up to 20 feet around. The trunk is thorny as well, but the leaves are deep-green and smooth, with a glossy shine that complements the cloud of tiny, greenish-white flowers that bloom in summer. The seed of Flatspine Prickly Ash is a popular condiment, valued for its unique mouth-numbing heat.
